EMBRACING CHANGE AND COMPETITION

Economic Environment

Almost a decade had elapsed since the Great War before signs of optimism began to return to the SBGI and its member companies. Economic recovery was some way off with the crash on Wall Street not taking place until 1929. However, the gas industry recognised that electricity was a formidable competitor. In the years, leading up to the Second World War, efforts were progressively mobilised to address that growing threat.

New structures were put in place and the SBGI played an active role in virtually all of them. In parallel, publicity and promotional activity was stepped up and “propaganda” abounded.

The British Commercial Gas Association adopted the high ground and funded educational films, which were shown in municipal premises and village halls.

Increasingly though, the Gas Industry was looking oversees for ideas to help improve the business and its competitiveness. In 1928, the World Power Conference – Fuel Conference was held in London from 24th September to 6th October and as a constituent member, the Society had many members present. Continuing the international theme, the Society sent Dr E W Smith as its delegate to the International Conference on Bituminous Coal in Pittsburgh, USA.
